Captain Atom: Armageddon
This past week the new "WorldStorm" books have started coming out, each presenting a new version of the Wildstorm universe. As Jim Lee said it is not a reboot, it is more of a revising of the universe, basically allowing the creators to pick and choose what they like about the characters' past and create new stories from that.
Captain Atom: Armageddon is where things ended. It tells the story of Captain Atom who ends up in the Wildstorm universe, and he is a time bomb who could potentially destroy their entire universe.
He meets all main Wildstorm characters, confronts them, tries to help them, or mate with them....
I particularly liked the contrast between the Wildstorm and the DC universes, which is a sense are complete opposites. Especially when you consifer that Apollo and Midnighter are "conterparts" to Superman and Batman.
Other than that, I feel this story could have been told in 4-6 issues, instead of 9. The plot is actually pretty straight forward, but there are almost entire issues that fill like fill ins. There are too many fight scenes, so that the end doesn't feel particularly important.
I did like the finality that this story allows. We see many deaths of beloved characters, which is kind of nice. On the other hand, you know they will be back with the relaunch, so it takes away from it.
The art by Camuncoli is very clean, the storytelling is also clear, which comes handy since there are so many fights.
I wanted to read this to prepare for the Worldstorm, but it really is not necessary to read this mini to enjoy the new titles. Mildly entertaining, but ultimately unnecessary.
